Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal has announced her separation from husband Parupalli Kashyap. The 2012 London Olympics medallist shared the news on Instagram, stating, "Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We're choosing peace, growth, and healing — for ourselves and each other.
I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time."
The couple, who tied the knot in 2018, both trained at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad. Saina made headlines with her Olympic bronze and consistent performances, while Kashyap claimed a gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Saina was the second Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, following Karnam Malleshwari. In 2015, she became the first Indian woman to reach the World No.1 ranking in women’s singles.
Saina's illustrious career includes numerous trophies and medals in premier badminton competitions. She holds the distinction of being the only female Indian player to achieve the world No.1 ranking in badminton, inspiring thousands of athletes and youth in the country.
As of now, Parupalli Kashyap has not made any public comment regarding the separation.
Last year, Saina had revealed she was struggling with arthritis, which had badly affected her knees. Speaking on Gagan Narang’s ‘House of Glory’ podcast, she said her cartilage was in poor shape and that it was difficult to train for extended hours. She acknowledged that limited training time made it hard to compete at the highest level.
